WHY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IS THE MISSING LINK IN PERFORMANCE, CULTURE AND LEADERSHIP

We often discuss skills, experience, and behaviours in the workplace, but the real key differentiator is something less visible. It’s Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

EQ is our ability to understand ourselves, manage our responses, and relate to others thoughtfully and constructively. It shapes how we lead, how we collaborate, how we handle pressure, and how we show up when things don’t go to plan. At Pivotal Partnerships, emotional intelligence isn’t an extra. It’s embedded in everything we do, because it’s the foundation of performance, trust and culture.

“Research shows that for jobs of all kinds, emotional intelligence is twice as important for outstanding performance as cognitive ability and technical skill combined.” - Daniel Goleman

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and to recognise and influence the emotions of others. It’s not just about being “nice” or good with people – it’s a proven driver of leadership effectiveness, team performance, employee engagement, and business growth. When EQ is high, leaders build trust, teams collaborate better, and organisations adapt more effectively to change. When it’s missing, even the best technical skills and strategies can fail to deliver.
“Understanding your own and your people’s behaviour and emotions is not a ‘soft’ skill … it is a power skill.”
- World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025

EQ IN ACTION:  PEOPLE • PERFORMANCE • GROWTH

People – Attract, engage, and retain talent. High-EQ leaders create workplaces where people want to join and stay. EQ builds trust, psychological safety, and fairness in hiring, making organisations more appealing to both employees and recruits.

Performance – Improve collaboration, adaptability, and results. EQ helps leaders and teams manage conflict, stay effective under pressure, and communicate with clarity. It turns good strategies into outcomes people can actually deliver.

Growth – Build leadership capability and resilience. In times of change, EQ supports faster decision-making, innovation, and the ability to lead through uncertainty. It translates cultural values into measurable behaviours that drive sustainable growth.
These are the shifts we help people make every day.

HOW I HELP YOU BUILD EQ

At Pivotal Partnerships, Emotional Intelligence is the golden thread running through everything I do. I help leaders, teams, and organisations embed EQ through three main approaches:

Assessments – using RocheMartin’s Emotional Capital Report (ECR): Self, 360, Team and Selection reports, each with a professional debrief to turn insights into action.
Workshops & Team Experiences – interactive sessions designed to build shared understanding, improve collaboration, and strengthen collective EQ.
1:1 and Group Coaching – personalised coaching journeys aligned to leadership goals and organisational priorities, always practical and outcomes-focused.

WHY ROCHEMARTIN?

To underpin this work, I use RocheMartin’s Emotional Capital framework – a scientifically validated model of EQ built on over 20 years of research and trusted globally by organisations like Oracle, EY, and Boeing. It measures 10 emotional and social skills across three clusters and provides clear, benchmarkable data to show progress over time.
Inner Focus (self-awareness and regulation):
Self-Knowing, Self-Confidence, Self-Control, Self-Reliance
Outer Focus (drive and direction):
Adaptability, Optimism, Self-Actualisation
Other Focus (relationships and impact):
Empathy, Relationship Skills, Straightforwardness

But the ECR is just the starting point. The real impact comes from how we use the insights together, embedding EQ into your people strategy, leadership, and culture. Unlike personality tools such as DISC or MBTI that show preferences and styles, the ECR goes further, it measures emotional skills you can actively develop to improve leadership, performance, and culture. It can work well alongside these tools, building on self-awareness to create measurable growth.

LET’S PUT EQ TO WORK

EQ isn’t fluffy. It’s foundational. Whether you’re hiring, developing, or leading, emotional intelligence is what makes the difference between knowing what to do and knowing how to do it well. Whether you’re ready for a full team workshop, an ECR assessment, or a coaching conversation, let’s explore how Emotional Intelligence could support you and your business.
